Electronic text.
Durable and attractive,
free to all users.
Hello, and welcome to Text Artisan Guild, Dorothea Salo’s professional website.
I am a librarian in Madison, Wisconsin, where I run an institutional repository for the University of Wisconsin System. I have also worked as an SGML/XML producer and typesetter for a scholarly-publishing services bureau, a teacher of college Spanish, and a maintainer of Visual Basic code-spaghetti for a survey-research organization.
My professional interests include:
- The movement for open access to the research and scholarly literature
- The care and feeding of institutional repositories
- Installing, configuring, updating, and customizing DSpace software.
- Social software and its use in libraries.
- Online professional education and its use in redressing professional divides.
- The progress of women in technical fields, systems librarianship especially.
I have been invited to speak for library schools, library associations, publisher consortia, trade associations, and major companies. I have also given preconference tutorials and conference talks on DSpace, library standards, and electronic books. My weblog has been active for over five years.
